Prevent and treat tick bites

Ticks are most common in tall, shady grass and dead leaves near trees and shrubs. Therefore, check for tick bites after visiting such areas.

Before you visit these places, you can always do things to prevent a tick bite.

• Apply a product containing DEET to exposed skin.
•  Stay on the paths as much as possible and avoid dense vegetation and shrubs.
Wear closed-toe shoes, long sleeves, and long pants. Tuck your pant legs into your socks. Ticks are easier to see on light-colored clothing.

• Wear clothing impregnated with the insect repellent Permethrin or spray your clothing with a product containing DEET (diethyltoluamide) contains.

These tips don't guarantee you won't get a tick bite. It's therefore important to check for tick bites after being outdoors.

Treating a tick bite

Remove the tick as soon as possible. Do not use alcohol, iodine, or soap before removing the tick. Do this only after removing it.

If a piece of the tick's head remains, it's harmless. It will come out on its own, just like a splinter. Note the date and location of the tick bite. Keep a close eye on the skin around the bite for three months after the tick bite. Pay particular attention to any discoloration or red circle at the bite site, or any symptoms consistent with Lyme disease.
